The Melbourne Sports Photography team have a significant investment in cameras, lighting and other photographic equipment.
Recently, Craig and Phil, made several visits to the Canon Experience Store in South Melbourne. This was a very positive experience. We had one lens and camera serviced at modest cost and both are now performing as new. The more significant development was the time spent investigating the new range of Canon mirror-less cameras and RF lenses. The technology developments in mirror-less cameras are significant and all the major camera manufacturers are moving to mirror-less and away from DSLR's.

The jump to the new technology does come at a cost. The very positive part of this experience was the terrific way Rob and the team at the Canon experience store patiently and expertly answered Craig and Phil's questions, and demonstrated the benefits of the mirror-less technology.
If you are thinking about buying new photographic equipment - consider a trip to the Canon Experience Store in South Melbourne. It's great to be able to try out the equipment before you purchase, and to be able to discuss issues with an expert team.
Thank you Rob and the team at Canon Experience Store in South Melbourne. There's now one very fancy mirror less camera and 2 RF lenses in the Melbourne Sports Photography stable! Look out for them at our next event.

Smiling faces, strong racing, and terrific scenery were highlights from the 2023 Hanging Rock Cycling Race. Melbourne Sports Photography's, Craig Dingle, was there to capture the action.
The morning started with fog and low cloud which quickly burned off to reveal the rock and a stunning summer day.

The race is a women's only handicap event with the stronger riders starting later and attempting to make their way through the field to the front. Raced over 68km this event is hosted by the Hawthorn Cycling Club. A full range of photos from the day can be found on the Hawthorn Cycling Club Facebook page.
Female cyclists - whatever your level - look out for next year's Hanging Rock Handicap race.

Melbourne Sports Photography founder and photographer, Craig Dingle, has shot a lot of basketball. Last year, he photographed everything from the Juniors through to the World Cup in Sydney. We ask him for some pointers for people starting out in basketball photography. Here is what he has to say.
Photographing basketball games can be a thrilling experience, especially if you're just starting out. With fast-paced action and exciting moments, capturing the essence of the game can be challenging. However, with the right skills and equipment, you can create stunning images that showcase the athleticism and grace of the players. Here are some tips to help you get started with basketball photography.
As with any type of photography, having the right equipment is crucial. For basketball, you will need a camera with a fast autofocus system and a high-quality lens. A zoom lens that covers a range of focal lengths is a great option, as it will allow you to capture wide shots of the court as well as zoom in on the action. A fast lens with a large aperture will also allow you to shoot in low light conditions, which is common in many indoor arenas.

The position from which you shoot can greatly affect the quality of your images. Ideally, you should be seated courtside or behind one of the baskets. This will allow you to be close to the action and capture the players' expressions and movements. If you're not able to get a courtside seat, consider shooting from a high angle, such as the upper deck. This will give you a bird's eye view of the court and can provide a unique perspective.
It's important to understand the rules and dynamics of basketball in order to anticipate the action. Familiarize yourself with the players, their positions, and their strengths and weaknesses. This will help you anticipate where the action is going to be and capture the most exciting moments.

Basketball is a fast-paced sport, so it's important to have a fast shutter speed to freeze the action. A shutter speed of 1/800th of a second or faster is recommended. Additionally, you may need to adjust your aperture and ISO settings to get the right exposure, depending on the lighting conditions. Don't be afraid to experiment with different settings to see what works best for you.
In conclusion, basketball photography can be a lot of fun and a great way to challenge yourself as a photographer. By getting the right equipment, finding the best shooting position, getting to know the game, and experimenting with your settings, you'll be well on your way to capturing stunning images that showcase the excitement and athleticism of the sport.

Junior sports clubs can greatly benefit from professional photography in a number of ways. Here are four ways that professional photography can help junior sports clubs:
1. Promoting the club: Professional photographs of the young athletes in action can be used to promote the club, its players, and its events to potential members and fans. High-quality images can be used in printed materials such as brochures and posters, as well as online through the club's website and social media channels. This can help attract new players and families to the club.

2. Recruiting new coaches: Professional photographs of the young athletes and their coaches can be used to showcase the talent and skill of the team. This can help attract new coaches and volunteers to the club, who can help to develop the young players and improve the quality of the club.
3. Building a sense of community: Professional photographs can capture important moments, games and events, which can be used to create albums, scrapbooks and other keepsakes for the club's members, players and families. This can help build a sense of community and belonging within the club, and create lasting memories for the young players and their families.

4. Creating a visual record: Professional photographs can create a visual record of the club's activities, which can be used to promote the club and connect with the audience. This can be especially important for junior sports clubs, who may not have the same level of media coverage as senior clubs.
In conclusion, professional photography can be an invaluable tool for junior sports clubs, helping them to attract new players, coaches, and families, build a sense of community, create lasting memories, and promote the club. By investing in professional photography, junior sports clubs can ensure that they have a high-quality visual record of their activities, which can be used to showcase their achievements and connect with their audience.
